North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has officially removed himself from consideration as Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate. Cooper's decision, announced on Monday, follows weeks of speculation about his potential candidacy. The move came as a surprise to many, considering Cooper was reported to be among the top contenders for the role.
Cooper issued a public statement expressing his support for Harris's campaign while clarifying his reasons for stepping out of the race. I strongly support Vice President Harris' campaign for President. I know she's going to win and I was honored to be considered for this role. This just wasn't the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket, he said in a post on X.
The North Carolina governor further elaborated that several factors influenced his decision. One key reason was the potential risk posed by his Republican Lieutenant Governor, Mark Robinson, who would assume control whenever Cooper was out of state. Under North Carolina's constitution, the lieutenant governor automatically becomes acting governor if the current governor leaves the state. Cooper was concerned that Robinson might take advantage of his absence to elevate his own political profile and pursue policies contrary to Cooper's administration.
Another reason for Cooper's withdrawal is that he might be eyeing a potential Senate run in the future. In his second and final term as governor, Cooper has been speculated to have national political ambitions, possibly aiming for a cabinet position or a Senate seat. Given his record of winning highly competitive elections and strong connections within the Democratic Party, Cooper remains a significant figure in U.S. politics.
Kamala Harris's campaign team, meanwhile, continues its search for a suitable vice-presidential candidate. Initially, they vetted a dozen potential running mates, narrowing the list to five serious contenders after Cooper's withdrawal. The top candidates now include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Among them, Shapiro and Kelly are seen as strong frontrunners. Drawing significant attention, Shapiro has already begun campaigning for Harris in key battleground states, emphasizing a future with clean energy and safety.
Cooper's rapport with Harris dates back to their tenures as state attorney generals, adding depth to his consideration as her vice-presidential choice. Despite rumors of his candidacy, Cooper stayed silent about his intentions until recently. He disclosed that he informed Harris's campaign early in the process that he did not wish to be considered but chose not to make it public to avoid dampening the party's enthusiasm for Harris's candidacy.
Speculation about Cooper's intentions persisted until he clarified his position to mitigate any distractions for Harris's campaign. There had begun to be a lot of speculation about the fact that I was not going to be in the pool of candidates, and in order to avoid the distraction of the speculation, I went ahead and announced that I was not going to be part of the group of people to be considered, Cooper told WRAL.
Political analysts see Cooper's decision as a strategic move, considering his ongoing tasks in North Carolina and the competitive gubernatorial race ahead. The seat will be contested by Republican Lt. Governor Mark Robinson and Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein. Cooper's choice to focus on state matters could help maintain Democratic control in North Carolina.
Moreover, Cooper's prospective Senate run in 2026 remains a topic of conversation. He is perceived as a strong Democratic candidate capable of flipping a crucial seat in the Senate, currently held by Republican Thom Tillis. His consistent political victories, coupled with his efforts on healthcare and energy policies, position him as a formidable contender in future elections.
As Kamala Harris's campaign advances towards finalizing her vice-presidential pick, the dynamics of American politics continue to evolve. Harris's choice will be pivotal in shaping her campaign and addressing the challenges in the upcoming election. As the political landscape shifts, candidates, both confirmed and speculated, will play significant roles in determining the election's outcome.
